Construction Site Accidents

Construction sites are dangerous and notorious for serious accidents.  Each year, more construction workers are hurt and killed than in any other major line of work in the United States.  Unfortunately, because of its dangerous nature, construction accidents result in  more than 1,200 worker deaths every year around the country.  There are also more than 400,000 injuries, many of them catastrophic.  Despite extensive regulations and laws enacted for worker safety, statistics say that one out of every ten construction workers suffer some kind of on the job injury this year.  The United States Department of Labor closely tracks statistical information for construction related accidents.

The most common causes of worker injuries and deaths are accidents involving falling objects or workers falling from elevated areas.  Many others result from accidents with motor vehicles, including trucks, cranes and forklifts, while workplace machinery and equipment also causes a large number of injuries and deaths. Electrocution, fires, explosions and exposure to harmful substances and environments also result in serious construction injuries and deaths.

As construction accidents may happen in any of a number of ways, there may also be a number of ways for an accident victim to recover compensation for their injuries. If the victim was a construction worker, he may have a worker’s compensation claim against his employer. As worker’s compensation recovery may be limited, there may be greater financial compensation available through claims against other entities on the site if they contributed to the occurrence of the accident. There may be general contractor, subcontractor, design professional, construction manager or even site owner responsibility for the victim’s accident.
